Work/life balance has become so hard to juggle over the past two decades. With ever increasing pressure from a fast paced work place and time spent on our phones and social media, it is hard to find time to cook dinner, clean dishes and still find time to spend with family and friends. That is one of the reasons why open concept homes have become so popular in recent years.
But now more than ever, with people working from home and kids learning remotely, COVID has made such an impact on all of our daily lives and an open concept kitchen and living space is well suited to meet these new demands. It allows us the opportunity to keep an eye on our kids from a distance while providing enough space for everyone to get work (or play) done on their own!
This kitchen and living room remodel we did in February 2019 is a great example of how a home remodel can bring the whole family together. We transformed this segmented 1953 floor plan into a more modern, open space that allows the chef in the house to continue to be a part of the action.
We added a load bearing, 18’ steal I-beam into the ceiling structure, creating a seamless transition from kitchen to living room. The new cabinets, counters and hardwood floors look great, but we think the smaller details really took this remodel to the next level.
The hand hewn antique beam used for the mantle really pops against the black slate fireplace surround. And the light grey glass backsplash from Tile by Design accents the champagne brass hardware, faucet and pendant light.
